Language Arts Overview
Language Arts includes: reading, writing, and word work/spelling
Reading
In our classroom we will use the Daily 5 (created by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser) structure during our language arts block. This structure helps students develop independence in the areas of reading and writing. Students will work independently, in small group and/or one on one with me during the rounds of Daily 5. These rounds include Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading. To Learn more about the the Daily 5 structure click on the link or continue to explore our website.
Along with Daily 5 we will use the CAFE system. CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. This system puts an emphasis on students setting goals and working independently and with me to reach their goals. We will work together in whole class settings or in one-on-one conferences. To learn more about the skills we will be working on use this link: Interactive CAFE menu
See "Reading Strategies" and "Choosing GOOD FIT books" tabs for more specifics. (Hover over the Language Arts tab.)
Writing
We will be writing for a variety of purposes, but our focus will be on 3 areas:
1--Informational writing
2--Persuasive writing
3--Narratives
Word Work / Spelling
During the week, students will be studying specific spelling patterns that are assigned based on their individual needs from the Words Their Way program. This program teaches students not to memorize certain words, but to apply the knowledge of their pattern to new words. That is why it is very important to practice the sorts many times during the week and to be word detectives and find the patterns as books are being read! There are a number of activities that students can chose from while practicing. Rainbow writing, magnetic letters, wiki spelling, dice writing, stamping words, and web sites are just a few of the activities students can do.
This year students will also be tested on their high frequency words. Students will work on their weekly assigned spelling pattern and then practice the high frequency words they need to know. You can find these words in the "spelling" part of their portfolio. Students will work on 10 words at a time. When they can show they have mastered those words, then they can move on to the next 10 words they need to work on in their lists. This is very individualize for each student.
